Uses of Construction Tape and Flexible Incision Drapes in Medical Settings

What are the uses of construction tape in medical settings?

In medical settings, construction tape is used as a versatile, heavy-duty adhesive product to reinforce adhesion, durability, and flexibility in high-stress fluid environments that may pose challenges to standard surgery foil or tape. In this regard, construction tape is usually not a direct replacement for surgical foil, but it is used in tandem to support specific adhesive medical applications such as:

  • Structural reinforcement of a sterile zone, particularly the edges
  • To replace clips, clamps, or ties
  • Stapling or pinning of drape materials
  • Temporary repairs of torn medical devices like drapes, covers, or sterile barriers

Construction tape is made of nonwoven or polymer-based materials and is often placed on top of drapes or surfaces, not directly on the skin. It is available in sterile and non-sterile formats, and unlike soluble tapes, it remains securely fastened in place until it is manually removed. Its primary role is to replace weaker tape or fastening tools, particularly in fluid-intensive procedures.

Flexible incision drapes and fenestration inserts for surgical precision

Flexible incision drapes are soft, pliable drainage devices inserted through or near a surgical incision to remove fluids from the area after the operation. Flexible incision drapes are made from silicone, polyurethane, or rubber and are soft enough to easily conform to the contours of the body. This device is used as a low-profile insertion meant to be minimally invasive, often inserted through small incisions and connected to drainage systems. Use cases for flexible incision drapes include:

  • Abdominal surgery
  • Plastic or reconstructive surgery
  • Orthopedic procedures
  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Breast surgery

Similarly, flexible fenestration inserts are pre-cut or customizable openings which are integrated into surgical drapes to allow for access to the surgical site. This is done to achieve targeted exposure of the precise area needed while maintaining a sterile barrier around the incision site. Therefore, flexible fenestration inserts are used to create surgical access points, control the size and shape of the exposure, and allow drapes to conform to irregular surfaces and provide additional reinforcement if needed.

Repositionable medical tape: secure hold without skin trauma

Soest Medical Group manufactures high-grade repositionable medical tape, which contains an adhesive layer that does not lose its tack even after multiple adjustments. The repositionable medical tape can securely stick to surfaces like human skin, textiles, devices, or drapes, even in high-moisture or fluid environments. Unlike standard medical adhesive products like tapes, strips, and drapes, repositionable medical tape uses an adhesive with a slightly weaker strength—low to medium levels of adhesive tack—to maintain the integrity of the surgical site through multiple adjustments. Materials like acrylic and hydrocolloid are specifically formulated for low initial tack but a bond strength that increases over time.

Medical tape die-cutting for custom shapes and fast application

Medical tape die-cutting is the process of cutting medical adhesive tapes into custom or tailor-made sizes using rotary or flatbed dies. This allows for the tape to be shaped according to specialized surgeries or medical procedures, ensuring more accurate application with better performance. As such, medical tape die-cutting can be used in a wide spectrum of applications, including surgical draping systems, wound care, electrode and sensor fixation, and device assembly. SMG manufactures custom-made adhesive products using medical tape die-cutting techniques to ensure accurate and repeatable placement of adhesive products, reducing the risk of skin trauma.
